First of all, round of applause for Bill Belichick. Getting Trent and a 7th for a 5th is a beautiful trade. But what could this mean for us?
First of all, Trent Brown will be making less money than what he originally was scheduled to. He loved it here in New England. Trent making less money than expected could really help out our offensive line. Trent wanted to be back, and we were able to make it happen.
But what could this mean for the rest of the offensive line? Well, first of all, by now it's pretty much a given that Joe Thuney will leave New England. He's been great for us, but he'll be much too expensive (Similar to what happened with Trent Brown when he left for the Raiders). Not only will Thuney likely be gone, but don't be surprised to see Marcus Cannon be released too. Trent Brown showed that he can be much better than Cannon, and Cannon has a large cap hit of about $8 Million. Although we have the cap space, don't be surprised to see Cannon gone. We can get better players for cheaper. I'd rather spend $3-5 Million on a good DL than spend $8 Million on Cannon.
But here's the biggest part. What could this mean for the run game. Go back to 2018, Sony Michel's rookie year. That was by far the best year of his career so far. The Patriots mainly ran it straight to Trent Brown. He was incredibly dominant. The same thing will likely happen this year with Damien Harris and Sony. Expect a breakout season for both of them, Harris taking most of the reps, but Sony coming in every once in a while and having a lot of good runs.
This could end up being an incredibly huge move for the Patriots. Expect the Patriots to run much more, and for Damien Harris to have an incredible season
